Hooray for rain
Sep 13th, 2007 by Julie Kirkwood
The rain last weekend is perking up my lawn — the crabgrass part, anyway.
This week in my Yard Dirt column, “The bright side of a parched lawn,” I talked about how nearly a month without rain bleached all the color from my yard.
Here’s what it looked like in the heat of the dry spell:
Now the weeds are returning, but I fear the worst for the regular grass.
Fortunately my order of grass seed (with clover, yay!!) arrived this week just in time to plant again.
It would be nice if I could actually keep a lawn for more than a year. This is becoming an expensive routine.
On a brighter note, here’s a photo my husband took of the sunflowers outside our front door. We’ve been amazed by the clusters of blossoms all on one stalk. Clearly this is a freak of nature because yesterday I found one of the stalks tipped over on its side — it couldn’t hold up its own weight. Another one is about half way to the ground.
Ah, well. At least we have the memories.
