More wasps

I’m not the only one who’s been startled by a giant wasp nest this summer. Here’s an e-mail I got from a reader named Scott in Newburyport, Mass.
Hi - I think it’s a good year for these guys. Last weekend I was sitting on a rock down by the ocean near Halibut Point State Park in Gloucester. After hours on my towel, I got ready to leave, and saw a huge wasps’ nest about 10 feet away from where I had been laying the whole time!
The bald faced hornets must like the dry summer we’ve had. I think your plan of “live & let live” is good, they didn’t bother me at all, I took pictures & video of the nest for a while, they didn’t seem to care. I looked them up on the internet, I saw one story where a guy stood still and the actually picked biting flies off his body!
Scott’s photos are much better than mine. He swears he didn’t get too close — it’s just his 12x zoom lens.
I was tempted to get up close for a macro shot, but I’m glad I didn’t. The ocean was nearby but I’m sure I would have broken an ankle trying to run across the boulders to get there if they came after me!
