Spontaneous sunflower
Aug 21st, 2007 by Julie Kirkwood
My front yard flower garden is full of surprises.
This sunflower popped up out of nowhere among my nasturtium and calendula plants. It must have come from a seed in my homemade compost, which I used to mulch the flowers.
If that’s true, then this is a very significant sunflower. It would have come from the sunflower seeds I used to feed my pet hamster, Chainsaw II, who died about a year ago. (Awwww, fluffy little Chainsaw. He was such a sleepy hamster, but he sure loved those sunflower seeds.)
Perhaps this is his sunny greeting from beyond the grave …
Whatever it is, it’s a lovely surprise.
Most of the sunflowers I planted intentionally this year have long since been devoured by chipmunks. The dozen or so that survived are at least a foot or two taller than I am and look ready to open any day now. Pictures will certainly be forthcoming if any of them actually bloom.
