Carole’s gardens

Carole Gura invited me over last week to tour her gardens at her home in Salisbury.
She gave me more gardening tips than I could scratch down in my notebook.
Here are just a few to start with:
Ignore the marketing on fertilizers and instead focus on the nutrients it contains.
For example, Espoma’s organic fertilizer called Holly-Tone is sold as a fertilizer specifically for acid-loving plants. Yet, in her opinion, it’s a good general purpose fertilizer. It’s got lots of trace elements that plants need, and nothing that makes it specifically for acid-loving plants.
Also, she gave me a quick run down on the basics of NPK numbers. The first number (nitrogen) is for leaves and grass. The second number (phosphorus) is for fruits and flowers. The third number (potassium) is for good plant structure.
