As summer kicks off, summer fruits are coming into season. Strawberry season has started, and it’s time to also enjoy raspberries, blueberries and watermelon.

A bowl of fruit salad is great for breakfast or dessert. Or slice some strawberries to serve with ice cream or whipped cream. Bake fruits into your favorite pastries or use them as toppers for pancakes or waffles. There are more ways to enjoy berries than there are days of summer.

Recently, I found a quick, easy and healthy afternoon or evening snack – fruit milkshakes. You can go fancy with them, but the basic recipe starts with combining a handful of fruit, a glass of milk, and a few ice cubes, then blending them in the blender.

From there, it’s all about taste and experimentation. I add a few packets of my favorite sweetener, and a little extract, whether it be a spash of vanilla or a few drops of almond. A little honey adds a nice touch from time to time, depending on the flavors.

It started as a way to make use of some strawberries that were just past their prime, and now I enjoy trying different combinations a few times a week. Cool, refreshing and filling!

What are some of your favorite ways to take advantage of the fruits of summer? I’d love to hear!

I like to freeze them and serve them in drinks, this also helps when making your frozen shakes for an icy fruit-juicy treat. This is good to remember when fruits are starting to turn as well so they never go to waste.

Don't forget that the leftovers/scraps are perfect for the mulch pile as well – next years plants will thank you for the added benefits of your fruit as well. Another trick is to freeze the fruit/vegetable scraps for the garden when it is wintertime and you cant access the garden. No more annoying odors in the trash as well.
