Just because I wasn’t cooking for the newsroom last Saturday night doesn’t mean I wasn’t busy in the kitchen. I spent much of Friday and Saturday peeling, chopping and slicing. The occasion? Grandma’s 90th birthday party.
It was deemed an elegant occasion and everyone from Grandma down to the 2-year-old seemed to have a good time. In my family, the menu is half the celebration. Our menu consisted of:
Cheese Tray
Gorgonzola-Bacon Truffles
Havarti and Muenster
Grapes
Crackers
Shrimp with sauce
Chicken Orange
Polenta Rounds with Basil and Pine Nuts
Vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, celery sticks, red and green peppers) with Cottage Cheese Dip
Phyllo Cups with Smoked Almond Bacon Filling
Nuts
Mushrooms
Roasted Tri-color Fingerling Potatoes
Sugar Snap Peas with Lemon Zest
Bourbon Glazed Carrots
Sliced Tomatoes with Basil and Vinegrette
Rolls & Butter
Almond Pound Cake with Fudge Filling
Lemon Squares
Hazelnut Bars
Frosted Dark Chocolate Brownies
Mixed Berries (Strawberries, Blueberries, Blackberries)
The food was delicious and I’m sad to report I’ve finished my leftovers. But the memories will linger for all involved.
