Tonight’s Methuen School Committee meeting has been cancelled, according to Superintendent Jeanne Whitten’s office.

I have been noticing gas prices creeping up to and around the $3 mark lately and saw this in my e-mail inbox today.

From MassachusettsGasPrices.com:

Massachusetts, MA, April 26- Average retail gasoline prices in Massachusetts have risen 3.8 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $2.82/g today. This compares with the national average that has stayed flat, moving just 1.2 cents per gallon in the last week to $2.85/g, according to gasoline price website MassachusettsGasPrices.com.

Including the change in gas prices in Massachusetts during the past week, prices today are 80.3 cents per gallon higher than the same day one year ago and are 9.7 cents per gallon higher than a month ago. The national average has increased 5.1 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 82.2 cents per gallon higher than this day a year ago.

I received this from news@timforgovernor.com at 6:14 a.m. today. The subject was: “BREAKING: Globe endorses Cahill!”

Team Cahill,

I wanted to be the first to share with you an important announcement. After spending the last few weeks plastered on the front page I suspect you might have had a feeling this was coming, but today makes it official. Our campaign is proud to accept the endorsement of the Boston Globe.

Happy April Fools Day,

METHUEN — Local gyms are encouraging animal lovers to get fit and help animals in the 7th annual “Tour de Pooch & Pals” Spin for Animals scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 6 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

In an effort to raise money for the animals and programs of the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals at Nevins Farm, spin instructors from Cedardale Health & Fitness in Haverhill, Seacoast Sports Club in Portsmouth, N.H., Fitness for You in North Andover, and Natural High Fitness and Fitness Factory, both in Newburyport, are calling upon seasoned spinners and those new to the workout to spin for one to three hours.

Participants in the spin can choose to register for one, two or three hours, and can spin as an individual or as a team. Registration is $30 per hour, and additional pledges are accepted. Those who raise more than $200 receive a T-shirt. To register, visit any of the participating gyms or mspca.org/nevins, said a press release from the MSPCA.

Be careful if you’re heading out on the roads tonight.

There has been a bit of chatter on the police scanner in the last hour or so about drivers slipping and sliding on the ice, mainly in Methuen. Police have not reported any injuries. DPW crews are sanding.

I am hosting a live Web chat on eagletribune.com during Obama’s State of the Union address tonight. The panelists will include Methuen Mayor William Manzi, Methuen citizen watchdog Jack Burke and Northern Essex Community College Professor Richard Padova. The experts will discuss the president’s speech in real time and for about 20 minutes afterward. Please check it out and post comments and/or questions.

Ryan is a Haverhill city councilor, a former state representative, former Haverhill mayor and former Haverhill School Committee member. He was one of the first people to say Scott Brown had a shot at defeating Martha Coakley.

The hosts of the “Politically Active” radio show on WCCM AM 1110 are holding a live budget forum Tuesday from 10 a.m. to noon at Mann Orchards in Methuen.

Here is a transcript of Gov. Lynch’s State of the State address, delivered in Concord today.  It was provided to The Eagle-Tribune by the governor’s office.

Governor John Lynch
State of the State Address
Thursday, January 21, 2010

Madam Speaker, Madam President, Mr. Chief Justice, honorable members of the Governor’s Council, the Judiciary, the House and Senate, and my fellow citizens of New Hampshire:

Let me take a moment to introduce my wife and our exceptional first lady, Dr. Susan Lynch. I want to thank her for her support and for all that she does for the people of New Hampshire.

We all mourn the lives lost in the Haitian earthquake and are saddened by the suffering that so many of that country’s residents are enduring. And for some New Hampshire residents, this tragedy is very personal, as they grieve and await news of family and friends. They are in our thoughts and they are in our prayers.

I want to acknowledge a very special group of New Hampshire citizens. During the next year, more than 1,100 members of the New Hampshire National Guard will be deployed to Iraq, Afghanistan and Kuwait.

They’ll leave behind their families, their jobs and their communities.

Let us commit that we will be there for these brave men and women – and their families – during the next year. Let us pray for their safe return. And let us thank them, all of our citizens serving in the armed forces, and all of our veterans – for their service and for their sacrifice.
