Former Red Sox slugger Mo Vaughn called the newsroom late last week from New York City to weigh in on the recent theft of equipment from the South Lawrence East Little League. Vaughn said he planned to donate money to the league, which has received $11,000 from supporters across the country.

He also offered an update on the ongoing construction work at Sycamore Village, an affordable housing complex on Lowell Street in Lawrence that Vaughn’s real estate development company bought earlier this year.

Vaughn said construction began three weeks ago on roughly 25 vacant apartments. It is the first of what is expected to be a multi- million-dollar investment at the 168-unit complex, which is located between Hampshire and Franklin streets.

“From afar, here in New York, I’ve heard all positive things,” said Vaughn. “We’re on our way. It seems like a very good tenant base.”

Vaughn said he plans to visit the apartment complex soon.

Vaughn played eight seasons with the Boston Red Sox before retiring in 2003 with the New York Mets. He was named the American League’s Most Valuable Player in 1995.
