Game 1 of this series was huge in terms of excitement.
Tonight is bigger.
Anywhere within a quarter-mile of the TD Banknorth Garden rocked. Thousands, and I mean thousands of fans wearing something green or Celtics-related are roaming the streets awaiting the start of the game.
Every bar near the Garden had a one-hour wait or more. It [...]

Ten thoughts after Game 5 last night:
1. These NBA Finals with the Celtics and Lakers are starting to feel like Sox-Yankees games in relation to the length of the games. Last night’s Game 5 lasted exactly three hours. Games 1, 2 and 4 lasted 2:44 while Game 3 lasted 2:48. If you’re wondering if this [...]

The Celtics have not only owned the third quarter for this NBA finals series with the Lakers, outscoring them 116-73, but they’ve pretty much owned the key quarter for the entire playoffs.
The Celtics own a 604 to 502 advantage in scoring in the third quarter, which averages out to 25.2 for the Celtics and 20.9 [...]

The Celtics 97-91 win over the Lakers in Game 4 was special.
You could hand out MVP trophies to several people last night. Here would be my Top 5.
Paul Pierce: He literally willed the Celtics to a win in the finals. While his numbers (20 points, 4 rebounds, 7 assists) were close to Kobe Bryant’s (17 [...]

A few things on my mind heading into tonight’s game:
*Aren’t ABC, ESPN and the NBA being a tad disingenuous when they put the 8:30 p.m. time on the teasers for the NBA Finals games?
Sometimes it is noted that “coverage begins” at 8:30 p.m., but the point is they all realize 9 p.m. doesn’t look good.
*Rajon [...]

If the Celtics do “this” they will tomorrow night.
What is it?
I have a busy day chasing Celtics-related stories.
I will be talking to Denver Nuggets coach George Karl, whose son Koby Karl is a 25-year-old rookie, out of Boise State, with the Lakers. Karl coached Paul [...]

It was remarkable the Celtics even had a chance to win this game.
Paul Pierce was not himself and Rajon Rondo’s strength, this speed and quickness, were gone with his twisted ankle.
Still, the Celtics hung tough.
Here are some observations from the Lakers’ 87-81 win:

The referees bought what Phil Jackson was selling after Game 2. He moaned about the calls. Well, the refs apparently had their TV sets on NBA-TV and made sure to even things out.
The Lakers had 22 free throw attempts in the first half versus only seven for the C’s.
A few other thoughts:
