Is Darrelle Revis the best cover cornerback in the NFL? Absolutely.
He owned Randy Moss on two occasions last year, particularly at Gillette Stadium in their Nov. 22 meeting (click here).
But there are a few factors about his contractual situation that make this an interesting case.
1. He signed a six-year contract for $30 million in 2007, which isn’t chump change. It also means he has three years remaining.
2. He is playing a team sport.
The first issue on the rookie contract, always makes me boil. Six years?! That is not right. Rookies should not sign more than a four-year deal. We all know that the average career for an NFL player is 3.5 years.
The second issue is that some of the guys only want what is theirs, which means the most money possible. There has to be limitations. Every franchise player can’t be paid $20 million for a football season even though their worth might resemble that.
The only way I see Revis being brought back is the add money to his original contract, maybe adding $10 million over the next three years, all guaranteed. It would not set a good precedent if they ripped up his contract and simply made him the highest paid player in the league, which apparently is his goal.
I love Revis, as a cover corner. He is the best I have ever seen, even better than Deion Sanders, because of his strength. He has an argument about the length of his contract. But that will be for another era (and new CBA).
I’m sure Patriots fans have no issues at all. In fact, some of you are probably enjoying the scenery and the squirming.
