While Vince Wilfork probably did come off as the consummate pro last week when he said the $7 million contract he possibly would get from the Patriots next season was “a slap in the face,” I have to say I am siding with Wilfork in this matter.
Wilfork signed a six-year deal as a rookie, a no-no for any player with any talent. He was paid $18 million, which is at least $10 million below his worth.
Anyway, now it’s his time to get paid and I can’t blame him. I don’t blame the Patriots either for trying to get the most for as little as possible, but the Patriots need more players around like Wilfork, guys that really care about winning.
My guess is that it will take upwards of $25 million in guarantees, and about $9 million per season, at least over four years.
Wilfork is a class guy off the field. He and his wife have really become part of the community in the Foxboro area.
I believe the Patriots will give in to Wilfork. They understand the sentiment. And let’s be honest, he still in his prime.
