I would argue with anybody who says bringing on Stephon Marbury for the stretch drive (including playoffs) is not a good decision.

The only way I would agree with the naysayers would be if they could prove he would ruin what the Celtics have going.

With Marbury expected to join the team tomorrow and probably play on Sunday (vs. Detroit), he fills two important needs.

1. Rest for Rondo.

While this isn’t a big deal. Rondo just turned 23. Playing 40 minutes in the playoffs is too much. Getting him around 35 is more advantageous to the cause and his energy.

2. Bench scoring.

This is a really big deal because this will allow Doc Rivers to leave all Big Three members on the bench, something he rarely does. He could also open up some jumpers for Eddie House, who could also take the point guard spot and move Marbury to the shooting guard position.

Would I want Marbury with three years and $60 million? No. That’s a different ball game altogether. Marbury is basically free, which means no risk.

Marbury needs the Celtics. The Celtics don’t need him, but could use him. There is a difference. Like Corey Dillon and Randy Moss, both of whom were acquired with one year remaining on their contracts, Marbury has to be on his best behavior.

If there is a potential downside it might be Rondo. How does he deal with such a high profile dude tresspassing on his property (as C’s point guard)? He has been told by Doc Rivers that he is The Man, but it could be a little jab at Rondo’s ego due to the fact he still isn’t noted for knocking down the open jumper, which is Marbury’s forte.

Again, it is too hard to argue against this deal. But I’m open.
