Matt Garza gets an A-plus. And Jon Lester gets his standard A.
The duo have made it a duel.
Through four innings, Garza has allowed one hit, a Dustin Pedroia homer and Lester allowed a run-scoring double on a good bit of hitting by Evan Longoria, who stuck out the bat and hit it down the right field line scoring Carlos Pena (he got on via a fielder’s choice).
Garza gets points for not blowing up after the Pedroia blast in the first inning, which was reminscent of B.J. Upton’s HR in the first inning on Saturday night as the second hitter. Beckett was fine after that, too.
Garza has thrown 75 pitches through five innings, which is on pace for at least seven innings. The Rays needed it badly.
The same with Lester. He has been similarly efficient, throwing 63 pitches through four innings, averaging just under 16 pitches per inning.
Hang on to your hats. Somebody’s going home with some heart break.
