Al Michaels, where are you?
The Red Sox have done the unthinkable after 24 of the sleepiest post-season innings in Red Sox recent playoff history.
Trailing 7-4 to open the eighth inning, Jason Bay led off with a walk followed by a two-run homer from J.D. Drew, whose playoff history is picking up accolades.
Then, with two outs, [...]

The Red Sox have officially woken up.
David Ortiz has pumped up Fenway Park. The Sox trail 7-4, but it feels like it is 7-6.
Stay tuned.
It wasn’t Babe Ruth-like. David Ortiz didn’t point to where he would hit a home run. But he did imply before the game he was going to hit one.
The three-run bomb to right field, about 15 rows up, was probably too little too late,
THe rally was started by Dustin Pedroia, who knocked in Mark Kotsay [...]
Here is a random World Series thought:
Who is the biggest winner, if the Tampa Bay Rays win the ALCS?
That’s easy. Phillies pitcher Brett Myers.
He doesn’t have to face the music and bring back the story of how he punched his wife in the face while here on June 23, 2006.
Myers was arrested and charged with [...]
Where was a move like this when it mattered?
Manager Terry Francona brought in Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon in the seventh inning with no outs and two on. It added a little excitement a lack-luster evening.
Of course, it didn’t work, with B.J. Upton hitting a double off the wall in left field, scoring both runners to [...]
Haverhill’s Carlos Pena continued to play the best baseball of his up-and-down career.
He hit a line shot, two-run homer to right field to put the Rays ahead, 4-0.
It was his third homer in three games here at Fenway Park. Wow.
Almost as soon as he touched home, Evan Longoria did him one better, hitting his fourth, [...]
Again, the night is still young, but Coco Crisp’s opportunity to make a case for himself, be it here or elsewhere next year, is 0-for-1 after his second-inning two-out strikeout with men on first and second.
He is batting leadoff, in place of Jacoby Ellsbury.
Again, not good.
Four of the first eight batters have had three-ball counts.
Through two innings he has thrown 47 pitches.
It’s early, but o much for Francona’s “we need Dice-K to go deep and be effective.”
What is the Red Sox playoff record the last weeks when they’ve allowed runs in the first two innings?
A hint: It’s really, really bad.
0-4, not including tonight.
****
One thing on the fans. They are better tonight. They came ready to cheer and liven the place up a bit, making it feel like a playoff game instead [...]
Rule No.1 for the Red Sox tonight was don’t fall behind early.
Well, it took about five minutes to break that one.
B.J. Upton hit another rocket, this one barely over the Green Monster, to left field for a quick 2-0 lead only two batters into the game.
If Scott Kazmir is on, and we will find that [...]
