It was a double-whammy.
The Red Sox blew an opportunity in the bottom of the seventh inning, first with Jacoby Ellsbury flying out to right field (a run scored) on a hittable pitch in the middle of the zone with two men on and no outs. And then Pedroia hit into an easy double play, 6-4-3.
About 10 minutes later Rocco Baldelli became the fourth Rhode Island native to hit a home run in the postseason (Davey Lopes, Paul Konerko and Gabby Hartnett are the others … That will be a good trivia question 10 years from now). There were two runners on for Baldelli’s towering blast which put the Rays ahead, 8-1.
Say good night to Game 3.
