Orioles troubles will continue on Thursday
Sep 2nd, 2008 by Bill Burt
The Baltimore Orioles will basically hand Thursday afternoon’s game over to the Red Sox.
Why?
Manager Dave Trembley basically admitted he doesn’t have any pitchers, at least starters, to go against Daisuke Matsuzaka in the series finale at 1:35 p.m. p.m.
Originally, the plan was to go with Jeremy Guthrie. But the 29-year-old starter was scratched with a “tired arm” and will miss a start.
So what is the Orioles answer against the 16-2 Dice K?
“We will be going to our bullpen. I’m not sure who it will be yet,” said Trembley. “It will probably depend on who pitches (on Tuesday night). I’m not sure how we’ll do it, probably have a guy go 40 to 50 pitches and we’ll go from there.”
Guthrie was possibly going to go on the disabled list but apparently he didn’t want to. And the fact that he’s had a decent season (10-11, 3.57 ERA) the team felt it would give him the benefit of the doubt.
“Guthrie deserves it,” said Trembley. “He’s done a really good job for us.”
You can all but scratch Fernando Cabrera, Alberto Castillo and Bob McCory, all of whom pitched more than an inning or relief.
