Views on Papelbon’s comments
Jul 17th, 2008 by Bill Burt
I have a column in today’s Eagle-Tribune laying into Jonathan Papelbon for his ill-advised, in my opinion, comments about wanting to close the All-Star game in lieu of Mariano Rivera.
You don’t need me to repeat the column. You can check it out here.
Let me know what you think.
I will say this. He is talking a lot more than he has in the past about issues that make me question if there are future problems. Just a thought.
Obviously, he is a great talent. But he’s not Mariano Rivera, at least not even close just yet.

It was a stupid thing to say and he should have known by now, seeing all the things Damon goes through on a regular basis, to STFU.
That said, I do hope that the fans generally take a good look at themselves and realize that to boo and heckle a player is one thing, but to harass a player’s spouse off the field is something else entirely. But of course they won’t because every year or so you hear of another story like this.

Paps should let the performance on the field do his talking. Remember, he did give up the go ahead run in the 8th.

Are you really now just noticing that Papelbon is moron? I don’t expect most baseball players to be geniuses, but he takes the cake. I am relatively certain that I have never heard anything even remotely intelligent come out of his mouth.
And kudos for taking him to task. Too many boston fans/media-types are blowing over his comments as being misconstrued and calling yankees fans the “real villians” for the booing. No one misunderstood him. He clearly stated that he thought that he had earned the right to close the game. Not that he wanted to, but that he had earned the right to. Which is idiotic to say 1) in enemy territory and 2) when you’re basivally saying that you have the right close over the best reliever in baseball history in his home stadium. And as for booing Papelbon during the parade… um, how is that any worse than the Madonna masks that fans were wearing last time A-Rod came to Fenway? Just sayin’… -

You think you are a big tough guy Bill? Would you tell Pap to shout up to his face? I doubt it. You are a clown.
Maybe you should work on the follow up story on Bob Ryan’s son dying. Get some facts on the one… like his name.
