Put another way, can the Red Sox survive with Jason Varitek’s declining numbers at the platem (.247, 15 HR, 62 RBI last two seasons)?
The bottom line is winning and the Red Sox are a better team when he is catching. Just go back to the 2006 season when he missed all of August. The Sox flunked their drive for the pennant and tumbled like Humpty-Dumpty.

I believe everyone would have to agree that Terry Francona is the right manager for these Boston Red Sox. He has grown into the position and is now reeking confidence after a feeling out process that lasted two seasons, maybe more.
With a new, multi-million dollar contract in hand, he is the man.

That’s right. Another loaded question.
Johan Santana looks like a Cy Young Award winner on opening day and the Sox have questions marks at the starting pitcher position. His 100 pitches in seven innings is something we haven’t seen much of around here outside of Josh Beckett.
The answer, in my opinion, is still yes.
The upside of Jon Lester, Jacoby Ellsbury and Clay Buchholz is too high, not to mention the $137.5 million contract Santana received.
