Tiger Woods: Best ever … I mean athlete
Mar 16th, 2008 by Bill Burt
I have a story in today’s Eagle-Tribune that basically says it’s time, especially after another dramatic Tiger Woods victory, to put him in his place in history.
I believe he is the best ever. And I mean athlete.
The comparisons to Jack Nicklaus and other golfers are old. He is the best, though I believe Nicklaus would have pushed him unlike any other because of his mental toughness.
But Woods is an athlete. We have to make that clear. And he performs his best when it’s on the line, which is just what we expect from Michael Jordan & Co.
I would like to hear your thoughts.

100%, I agree. -

Tiger Woods is the least interesting competitor in sports. He plays a boring game, he doesn’t give anyone any reason to watch, and he gets a ridiculous amount of hype.

Everyone else in that non-athletic sport is just bad and add in Tigers ZERO personality, i have no interest. Im with you Mike Daly! I do understand hitting a 24 ft putt to win is absolutely amazing, but im not sure it takes an incredible athlete to do it. It takes someone that excelled in Geometry. An incredible athlete is someone that pushes their body to the limit day in and day out along with exceptional skill and doing it at the highest level.

Hey Bill,
I was just trying to “stir the pot” with all the Golfers out there. Its easy for me to say because i dont play golf much, but i do know how difficult it is to hit a small ball into a very small hole from 400 yards away in 4 tries. I also realize how dominating Tiger is and that he makes his competition look bad, but im not putting him in the “Best Athlete” category by a long shot. -

Bill, I know about the TV ratings and so forth, and I for the life of me can’t figure them out. There is NOTHING in the least bit interesting about Tiger Woods or his game.
The comparison with Michael Jordan is interesting, because Jordan proved (through no fault of his own) to be the worst thing to happen to the NBA - he turned it from a team-oriented game into a “me first” game as players who wanted to “be like Mike” became more common. Only recently has the NBA game begun to evolve away from stat-oriented me-firsters back toward a team-oriented game.

Mike,
The NBA is becoming more of a team-oriented sport…except for Cleveland… -
