I got an interesting tidbit from Joe Fish and Loft Restaurant owner Jimmy Dietz, a frustrated baseball player if there ever was one, who recently returned from the hugely successful Red Sox Fantasy Camp in Fort Myers, Fla.
Dietz led the all hitters — there were about 120 in all — with a .650 batting average, though he was hitless against the ex-Soxers, including Rich Gale and Jim Corsi, calling it the vacation of his life.
But the most interesting story was about Roger Clemens, who has never attended the camp.
Each night at dinner, said Dietz, there would be a live auction with proceeds going to the Jimmy Fund. Several autographed balls and bats were auctioned off each night.
Guess which item got the fewest dollars all week, according to Dietz? A Clemens’ signed baseball.
“It was weird,” said Dietz, who also was a key pitcher on his 4-4 squad. “When the announcement was made there were a few jokes and guys shouting ‘steroids!’ And when the ball was up for bid there was silence. Nobody was bidding. The auctioneer talked about all Roger has meant for baseball, and so on, and eventually it got about $250. It was the lowest bid of the entire week.”
Interesting.

I would have bid heavily on the Roger Clemens signed syringe.

Wow. Really should have sold my autographed Clemens Bat from the World Series back when he was with the Yankees. And autographed photo and ball a few years ago. If he gets indicted I might at well give it to my dog to chew on!

This is totally unrelated, but you think Asante is gone? I heard reports but wasn’t sure. I was really hoping he would stay. I think he is a bit overrated but there is nothing out there on the market. I heard Michael Holley say today that there is litlle chance he will be back, and what Holley says I usually listen to!

I believe he is gone. I just think with the Super Bowl loss and the recent “spygate” stuff added on to his demands to be paid like the best corner in the league that he will be elsewhere.
It’s easy to say the Pats should sign him, but I believe Belichick probably has a value for him and he won’t probably won’t budge. If I had that number (I guess is $8 mill a year over four years vs. the $10 million he wants) I would know for sure.

A source has just told me Asante wants about $11 million, which would put him ahead of Tom Brady. It appears that $8.5 million is as far as the Patriots would go. Stay tuned.
