Trade off for now
Dec 6th, 2007 by Bill Burt
Theo Epstein is home. And several Red Sox players and prospects are too.
This is not an easy move for anybody involved. The fact that the Twins weren’t able to decide on the Sox offers (the one not including Jacoby Ellsbury or another one that didn’t include Jon Lester) makes you wonder if there is debate back in Minneapolis.
The Twins should try to get everything they can. They are trading a sure thing, a player who makes a decent team a contender or a contender a favorite, or in the Red Sox case, a favorite to a probable World Champion if health prevails.
As for Ellsbury, it appears the Red Sox have decided he can be part of the equation, just not he and Lester.
If the Red Sox make this trade, good. If they don’t make this trade, even better.
I believe that’s how most fans feel about this.
As I wrote in today’s paper, I am impressed with the Yankees jumping ship from their win-now-at-all-costs mentality, and sticking with their talented core group of young prospects.
Of course, their fans, who like Sox fans, are in agreement that they’d rather take a chance on the “kids” makes it easier.
As for the trade being off, it is only for now. These things work in strange ways. And remember, the Sox have become very good at hiding important secrets, just like their counterparts in Foxboro.
Stay tuned.
