I will be heading down to Fenway Park early tomorrow and will open up an opportunity to my blessed readers.
If you’d like to ask a player a question, any player, what would it be?
Leave it in the comments section and I will try to get answers to all questions before the start of tomorrow night’s games.
Let’s keep this clean. You can ask a personal question as to why a guy wears a necklace to a player’s favorite pre-game snack.
Let ‘em rip …

I’ve always heard that “maybe he’s tipping his pitches” as an explanation as to why a pitcher is getting lit up.

    So….

For a pitcher (Beckett?): How much time and effort do you put into making sure that you aren’t tipping any of your pitches? When was the last time that you found out/suspected that you were tipping them?

For a hitter (Ortiz?): Say you had intel that the opposing pitcher tips his pitches so you knew pitch type and intended location of every pitch for an all-star caliber pitcher. If you’re a .320/35 HR guy now, could you expect 100 HR with that knowledge? A .500 average?

Can you ask Jason Varitek why he still uses that Three Doors Down “Superman” song every time he comes up to bat? Every other player switches his song up occasionally, but ‘Tek has been using that since the turn of the century. And find out what song he’d choose if he had to pick a new one. Thanks, Bill, this should be a cool feature.

Since Schilling has reinvented himself as a pitcher, it appears that he is struggling at around the 80-86 pitch mark. Does he think that is a conditioning problem, ie he’s getting tired, or is it a drop off in velocity that is causing him to be less effective.

Can you ask Hideiki Okajima San (Bill, you may already know), what is that red & white (rawhide, plastic?) necklace he wears around his neck when he’s on the mound? Is it a form of a Kyoto friendship necklace, ring or ethereal power attracter to his pitches charm? (I noticed that Beckett and maybe Daisuke also wear a simiilar ‘braided charm’ around their necks, … superstitious?) Thanks!

I think they are magnets, Nashua. They are used in Japan a lot for shiatsu therapy as well as traditional chinese medicine. You can see some pitchers in the league with 6 or 8 of them around their necks (check out Vizcaino of the Yankees for a laugh). I can tell you they don’t work for fat people but if you put one on and win a game, hey, try another.

I heard Theo told our resident bud light genius to put his pants back on and not to use the champagne bottle as a penis enhancement. I would be very interested to find out if any adult has taken the wid to one side (say like his agent) and told him that if he wants to make real money he should ask himself whether Tom Brady or Derek Jeter would do this first. I really don’t think the sawks are interested in the bruins’ market fan base.

    Bill,
I noticed that when Dice-K is taken out of a game he will remain on the hill and waits for his teammate from the bullpen to pat gloves with him, then heads for the dugout. I find this gesture admirable and was wondering where, when did Dice-K start this? Is it a Nippon Professional Baseball tradition or something that Dice-K does on his own? Thanks for taking our questions.

(Pasta Lugo: Thanks for your input on Okijima)
