Panicking yet?

The New York Yankees are now seven games out, six in the loss column.

The Red Sox haven’t had a clutch hit since … does anybody remember when?

Are you concerned? I mean really concerned?

If you are, what would you do to changes things up?

I am open to all suggestions.

I've been 'concerned' since game one, and that didn't change when we were up by 13 games. Too much time, and too little offense for the Sox. I still don't know how we finished half the season on top of the MLB standings.

Panic? If i were the manager? Impossible to say. Depends on a lot of factors and information to which i'm not privy. How will Schilling return? How bad is Ortiz' knee? Youkilis' health? Will the league 'figure out' Matsuzaka? Can Gabbard continue? How good are Buchholz and Lester?

I think we can assume that Lugo will finish somewhere between where he is now and where he was two weeks ago. That'll be an improvement. Pedroia is a wildcard. I don't understand how he could have been so bad early and so phenomenal late. We have to get Lowell and Youkilis to maintain early season proficiency, and expect Ramirez and Papi to improve significantly. But, i'm not seeing that likelihood from Papi. He looks like Lugo did last month.

What to change? When Schilling returns, exchange Wakefield for Gabbard, and Tavarez for one of the young arms. Don't give Pena another AB. Take Drew on a paintball teambuilding/bonding excursion. Tickle him. Slap him. Reprogram his motherboard. Anything.

Then, ask Allah to carry us to victory.

Oh, yeah - is it too late to get Ron "Papa Jack" Jackson back?

I'm not worried. It's a very long season, and we're just more than halfway through. I have faith that Theo will add another bat by the trading deadline, Schilling will come back strong and the proverbial ship will be righted. Plus, did anyone really think the Sox were going to keep a 13-game lead throughout the season?

Terrry should field this lineup and LEAVE IT ALONE.

    1-Lugo (on-base man, finally hitting)
    2-Youklis (on-base man, better here)
    3-Ortiz
    4-Ramirez
    5-Lowell
    6-Varitek
    7-Drew (less pressure)
8-Pedroia (hit-and-run possibility after Dreew walks)
9-Crisp (speed at the bottom is valuable for turning lineup over)

And Theo? Find another backup catcher please.

    "Let The CHOKE Begin!"

Come On you deluded Sox fans out there, it's Choke Time, it's going to happen and there's no stopping it. Go ahead change the lineup, Manny's hairdo, Pedroia's batting gloves, which way the wind blows, it won't matter! These guys look like a bunch of Raggedy Anns out there. This Team AIN'T Got IT! Not this year! They don't have the Killer Instinct. That's why they lose to KC and the White Sox, teams that are struggling, but they know how to KILL! Bill Burt is SO Right, when was the last time you saw them get a CLUTCH hit, never mind a Timely Hit? Can't remember can you? Feel the Pressure mounting around your throat? It's called Choke and it's coming, No Stopping It!
Acchhh Acchhh Acchhh.... Catch your Breath, maybe they'll win one game against the White Sox? Let's continue.... How many times have you seen these inmates of the Asylum knock a simple run in? Lost count huh? 1st and 3rd, no outs or one out and they can't get a lousy Fly Ball, A Fly Ball! It turns into an exercise in futility, strikeout, pop foul, meek Mary grounder, double play etc. They Are The Kings of the LOB. I played sandlot and even I can get a fly ball out for a Sac and a run scored better than these trogs who are Making MILLIONS of Dollars! SAD, very sad. I know guys in the Over-30 and Over-40 Leagues (wooden bat) that are better at getting a SIMPLE sacrifice run in than what I've seen from these -so called- Millionaire professionals! The slumps will continue, Nancy Drew will go on the DL, others will go on the DL, the front office makes no deadline moves or they do something like get a special rake that is to be used only around homeplate. The Choke is Coming! You Feel It, the walls are closing in, it's getting dark, Nancy Drew bats Righthanded trying to turn things around...AAAHHHhhhhhh. Let The CHOKE Begin!!

If I'm wrong, (highly unlikely), I'll be back here to make ammends and eat Crow, count on it, I swear on Bill Burt's Scooter! But, I doubt it. I'll be suprised if this team makes the playoffs. Adieu

Hey Nashua. Put the crack pipe down. We have a 7 game lead on the 20th of July! Every team goes through tough times and struggles. The team chasing us had done so twice. We have one of the easiest schedules in baseball in September and the team chasing us(Likely your team from the sound of your message) went 5-9 after their most reacent hot streak in June! Ever hear of the law of averages? We will get hot and the team chasing us will get cold again. The only CHOKE I recall is in the 2004 ALCS which was the CHOKE of all CHOKES.
    Red Sox World Champs 2007!
Now put that crack pipe down Nashua before you hurt yourself!

First off Hi Bill, I am sure you know who I am from my playing days up in the Merrimack Valley :) I stumbled upon this blog and im sure I will be stopping by more often.

Back to the topic at hand, yes I am very concerned about the status of the sox right now. I never truely let myself enjoy the 13 game lead we once had on them knowing very well this could happen at anytime. Not because its the Sox, but because baseball is a funny game and such a long season, you never know what could happen in the course of a season, so here we go again.

First off get rid of Wily Mo Pena, besides him throwing me a ball in Centerfield last year (that I caught with one hand and was bruised for two days afterward), I have no use for him and neither do the sox.

I think the lineup needs a shake up!! Youk is struggling in the fifth spot, maybe put Lowell there? That is a tough spot to fill but I dont' think Youk is the answer right now. Im not sure how I feel about Drew leading off either. We bring this guy in for millions of dollars sending Trot packing and what the heck has he done for us? Oh and he was out last night for another hamstring issue? Come on ............. he's probably a nice guy but this situation isn't helping this team at all!!

Besides Beckett the pitching hasn't been all that consistent either. Send Tavarez back to the pen and bring up Lester, give him a chance. Tavarez held his own but I think its time to try something different. The Pen needs the help, Tavarez could be that guy you bring in for the 6th, 7th inning over Lopez or Pinereo. I have no complaints about the rest of the Pen, DelCarmen has looked GREAT, Timlin has been decent, OkaJima incredible and of course Paps!! WE just need that middle relief guy, maybe Tavarez could be it!!

Well that is all that comes to mind for now, I already got my tix to see Schil on Saturday at McCoy, I will let you know what I think haha
  • All will be fine. Stay away from the Tobin. Take deep breaths. Relax. Or take Dexter Haven's advice back in June: BENCH Lugo!! :)

The Sox have 3 needs. In order, they are: 1) a back-up "defensive" catcher, in case anything happens to Tek; 2) a bat, preferably LH, with power, because we need another RBI-man and as insurance for Papi; and 3) another arm, although Schill's return will be welcome.
Our "chips" are Wily Mo, Devern Hansack (check his numbers with the Pawsox), Piniero, who has been OK, nothing more, Tavares (although his value is plummetting) and the willingness of the front office to take on salary in order to win.
These chips are not what most teams are looking for in a trade. They want young arms. Only Hansack qualifies and he is not a top-line prospect.
So, what do we do? What the NYY did last year - take high-salaried vets off the hands of cheap teams like the Phillies.
As much as I dislike his whole aura, how about Pat Burrell for absolutely nothing!
