Julio Lugo had a career day at the plate (3-for-3, HR, 2RBI and a walk) and two important things didn’t happen.

The Sox still lost, 6-5, and Lugo’s batting average didn’t cross the Mendoza Line (.200).

The moral of the story is the Red Sox have more problems than Lugo and most of them are when the Sox have bats in their hands.

Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz are having good years for decent players, but bad years for great players.

Coco Crisp is looking good. So is Dustin Pedroia. But wins and losses come down to producing runs and Ortiz and Ramirez aren’t doing it despite their All-Star game trip.

Anyway, if the Sox are great, and they aren’t right now, three things have to happen: Manny or Ortiz carry the team; Crisp bats leadoff and nears .300; and Lugo or J.D. Drew turn it around.

Those are big “ifs.”

What three things do you feel have to happen, beyond what’s happened thus far, if the Sox are anywhere close to as good as the Tigers?

I’d be interested in your thoughts.
