My column on ESPN’s Michael Wilbon has elicted much response, which is a good thing. Sometimes we need to discuss topics that aren’t always as easy as lousy managerial decisions or slumping shortstops.

If I could take anything back it would be calling Wilbon a “jerk.” I don’t know him. In fact, I like him on Pardon the Interruption (PTI). What he said may have been idiotic and ill-advised, but that is not a good enough reason to throw a personal barb at someone.

I apologize for that.

The rest stands.

Just a question. How many black employees does the Eagle Tribune have in the newsroom?
  • Bob
What does that have to do with our discussion? Do you want a breakdown of all minorities, women, nationalities ... etc.?
I think that discussion is probably for another chat, unrelated to sports.

If you're going to discuss race, everything is in play.

    I'm waiting for an answer.

An apology was not warranted, Bill.

The column was fine as originally presented.

    Bill,

I always thought your "too dumb to breathe air" act on WEEI was just that, an act. Now I know it's for realand you are as stupid as you sound on the radio. Take off your stupid suit and tie for once and cross Columbus Ave. Then tell me this town doesn't have a race problem. You boob.

Columbus Ave. in North Andover? Methuen?
  • Not afraid to cross Columbus
    Columbus Ave. in Boston
  • CK
Are you serious? If you think Boston has a race problem then every major city has one. Boston is no better or worse then the rest of them.
  • Not afraid to cross Columbus
    Right. It's just more segregated.
  • Dennis
When all is said and done, just another fine moment for The Eagle-Tribune and it's mighty Executive Sports Editor. Anyone think circulation has taken a hit over this?
  • Bob Cobb
You know David Ortiz isn't technically black right?
  • Paul
I appreciate the response, but name-calling isn't ever the smart thing to do. Sometimes when you're ticked off, you blurt something out that you didn't have to. He was wrong, in my opinion, that's all.
  • Joe
Your article was right on Bill.Michael Wilbon is the one who should apologize!
  • D
There is racism in every city. There are plenty of other cities that are just as segregated or more than Boston. In fact the 2000 U.S. Census listed the 10 most segregated cities. Boston was NOT on that list. The major difference between Boston and other cities is that other cities have a larger black population.

    Bob Cobb,
Sorry, but why isn't David Ortiz considered "black"? Because he wasn't born in the US? Or because his primary language is Spanish? Pretty sure that his ancestors were enslaved in the same fashion as "blacks" brought over here on boats and forced into labor.

Count me in as agreeing that your comment was right on and I too see no need to apologize. The guy is a jerk for making inflammatory racial remarks without checking his sports facts first.
  • You don't really need or want that lifestyle, it might hurt y'all slowly more.......Just tell him you
don't wanna repeat something your not too proud of z7uas.
