Here are a few of the early responses to Roger Clemens going to the Yankees for what is pro-rated amount of $28 million. When all is said and done the Yankees will pay Roger about $18.5 million. Add in about $7.4 million for the luxury tax bill (I’ll have more on this later) to be paid at the end of the 2007 season, and the price tag is closer to $26 million for Clemens to pitch in the Bronx the rest of this season

Chuck said:

“While I harbored semi-secret desires to see Roger return to wear a Sox uni, I have no problem with the Sox not opening their ’secret vault’. They don’t have the over-riding need for another starter. The Yanks on the other hand a in serious need.”
The key is here is Daisuke Matsuzaka. If he were not a member of the Red Sox, Theo Epstein would have pushed this Clemens issue more.

As Curt Schilling said, the Red Sox don’t need Clemens. Of course, the caveat is “right now” and “not the immediate future.”

I have a column in Monday’s Eagle-Tribune Publishing sports sections on Roger Clemens signing with the Yankees to the richest one-year deal ever for a pitcher … about $24 million.

The Yankees had to make this move for two reasons:

I want to know what your biggest concerns are.

Dustin Pedroia. He just doesn’t look good at the plate. At some time, he’s going to have produce or get his confidence back with Pawtucket.
Defense. Other than Coco Crisp, … continued »

By the time the first pitch was thrown tonight at 7:08, a nation was watching … again.
Daisuke Matsuzaka threw the first pitch to Ichiro Suzuki at 8:08 a.m., Tokyo time.
According to Red Sox media relations department the Japanese media contingent is stil big following last night’s Red Sox starter. But it has fallen off to about one-third of what it was when Matsuzaka threw the his first career pitch at Fenway Park to Ichiro on … continued »

First off, let’s get something straight. Josh Beckett is not only a very good pitcher, with an World Series MVP Trophy to prove it, but April has annually be one of his better months.

Now 62-45 for his career, his 7-inning, 6-hit and 3-run performance tonight was better than solid.  In fact, for a while — through four innings — he didn’t allow a hit.

He is now 18-9 over his first six starts each season since … continued »

Thoughts on Moss

Let’s take a hack at the most asked question I’ve had since Sunday morning: What do you think about the Randy Moss acquistion?

Here’s a link to the original column that ran in our Eagle-Tribune Publishing Co. papers on Monday. While my theme hasn’t changed three days later | I believe Moss makes the Patriots the favorites to win in 2008 with an exclamation point | I am struck by how … continued »
