Why wasn’t Jim Lonborg, the ace during the incredible Impossible Dream season, at the ceremony honoring the 1967 Red Sox on Opening Day?

Is Drew Bledsoe, the recently retired ex-Patriots quarterback, a Hall of Famer?

What are local pro baseball scouts saying about North Andover High’s rags-to-riches pitcher and probable early draft choice Mike Hashem?

Those are all good questions. And guess what? I have some thoughts on all of the above, and much, much more.

Welcome to Opening Day for my new blog, Burt Talks Sports.

And that’s what I’ll be doing, talking about sports right here.

This is yet another great way to mingle with readers of our family of newspapers — The Eagle-Tribune, Salem News, Daily News of Newburyport, and Gloucester Daily Times. And you’ll also hear from invited guests.

After 20-plus years in this business, it’s time for me to catch up with the trend of instantaneous stories, information, analysis. And of course, my opinion.

I also want to find out what you think when it comes to our sports teams, both pro and local. I want your analysis and your opinion. I want to know your questions — some of which I can answer; others which I’ll research or quote someone else.

There are no rules here, other than being professional … you and me.

This is not about hurling cheap shots or unsubstantiated rumors. This is about finding interesting stories, tidbits of information, and topics to add to the coverage in our print newspapers.

When a big story breaks on the sports scene, and I’m within an earshot of my laptop or newsroom desk, I’ll try to get the rest of the story.

So let’s give this a whirl and enjoy each other’s company.

As they say on Opening Day, let’s “Play ball!”

Glad to see you finally got a blog!

What no mention of Randy Moss? How awesome is he going to be for the Patriots? I am truly excited to be a Boston sports fan.

    well???

Drew Bledsoe in the Hall of Fame? I know Canton is a little less exclusive than Cooperstown, but the only Hall of Fame that Drew belongs in is the Hall of Fame of Drive-Killing Interceptions.
  • so, you answering those questions anytime soon or what?

Welcome to the world of blogging - you brave fool. Although you've requested "no cheap shots" expect them. It's part of the fun.
Moss coming to the Pat's is going to be a big mistake. Just because he says how wonderful he is and all they great stuff he is going to bring to the table doesnt excuse the fact he is a punk. Expect him to snap by week 5.
So who in the pen is coming down with sore shoulder syndrome to make room for John Lester?

Congratulations on the Blog, I think. My first exposure to this corner of the internet, so dunno if I am responding properly.

My guess is that Lonborg was not at the '67 Opening Day celebration because he was skiing???

Good luck with this and I look forward to breaking the news of its existence to the n'ere do-wells that I hang with at 9's and various sporting venues.

    Congratulations, Bill:

I concur with several of your readers that it's about time you got your own blog. And, I'm happy to write on your opening day. One question from me; Are the Yankees going to make a serious run for the division this year given the utter collapse of their rotation?

    All the best - John

No John the Yanks are going to lay down and play dead. Get real buddy. Expect the Wizard of NY to reach into his bag and pull out a heart, courage, brains ... and a check book to buy a few arms. There's no place like home. There's no place like home. There's no place ....
  • Hi Burt and welcome to the blogosphere.

I just wanted to let you know that your RSS feed works and that I've added your blog to my newsreader successfully.

I look forward to your comments on the Boston sports scene.

    Respectfully,

    Irv Arons

$500 a pop for the WEEI gig!!! WOW and I thought major league ballplayers were way over paid!
Also, I know as long as the Sox keep winning they are going to stick with Pedroia. Unfortunately this horrible trip he's on is only going to eventually crush his confidence and begin to hurt the club. Move him now.

    Hi Bill:

It's nice they found something for you to do.
  • I had to remove a few comments that crossed a line. Let's get back to sports. As noted earlier I will be answering any questions later today.
  • Martha Cadigan
Congratulations, Bill! Question: What is your opinion of Barry Bonds probably breaking Hank Aaron's homerun record this year, and how do you think this changes the history of baseball with the presumption that he was aided in this record breaker by the use of steroids? Does this change things for children as they see sports players as idols? (And for grown-ups for that matter?)

    Thanks.

    Billy boy,

    Bill -
This is the "Red Sox being Manny"... no slide, Crisp looking at a third strike (what happened to 'if it is close enough to get your bat on it'), Lugo swinging at a strike one a foot out of the zone... basic fundementals are lacking all around.
