Making their move(s)
Mar 27th, 2007 by Rob Bradford
Sox manager Terry Francona just informed the media of a few roster moves:
- Kyle Snyder has been told he will be making the team. The righty will next pitch three innings in Philadelphia to keep him somewhat stretched out as to stay versatile in his bullpen/swing starter role.
- Craig Hansen and Bryan Corey both were told they will be going to Pawtucket. The fact Corey doesn’t have options doesn’t matter in this case as he came to camp as a non-roster invitee. Corey performed admirably this spring, pitching in nine games (11 innings), surrendering two runs while striking out five and not walking a batter.
Francona said that Hansen won’t have a specific role with the PawSox but will got down and “compete” while trying to “separate himself from other pitchers.” The manager said that he doesn’t need to close, but rather simply pitch as needed.
- The moves leaves one spot in the bullpen, with Javier Lopez and Manny Delcarmen vying for the role. It is a position which will be held until Mike Timlin comes back from the disabled list. Francona said that more players need to be talked to today, including Jon Lester. Timlin will throw off the mound today.
- Both Joel Pineiro and Brendan Donnelly were encouraged heading into the final week of camp. Pineiro, who hasn’t given up a run since March 3, said that he feels much more secure in his new delivery than earlier this month. Donnelly is feeling much better about his fastball command. He had felt a bit off on with his fastball due in part to the time he was using to tinker with some variations of his other pitches. As he said, that is the epitome of spring training.

I’ve heard that other teams are talking some about Pineiro. Is it true the Sox cannot trade him though until 6 months has passed since signing him to a contract? I’ve read conflicting views on this… with some saying the Sox have to wait until June to trade him.

With Papelbon apparently planning to be a closer for the rest of his career, where does this leave Craig Hansen? He has rarely pitched well in the majors, and he’s been a disaster this spring.
Not to make too much of demeanor or get into the obvious biases that we all can have just be looking at players, but Papelbon’s confidence is almost overwhelming whereas Hansen looks like he has no idea what’s going to happen when he lets go of the ball. I wouldn’t be surprised or upset if they traded this project and some others for a proven player. -

Hansen seems like the perfect candidate for the “change of scenery” plan…

I think that no matter the rule - Pineiro can approve a deal. He likely wants a trade where he can close since he has an incentive for games finished.
Rob - I think Lopez is out of options, so Manny D makes the team. The Loggy likely gets claimed.
