Signing for a signing
Mar 24th, 2007 by Rob Bradford
Jason Kenney of Somerset likes Curt Schilling. Jason Kenney wants Curt Schilling to stay in Boston for another year beyond this one. Jason Kenney isn’t standing idly by.
Kenney has begun a campaign, entitled, “Keep the Ace in Our Place.” He is soliciting signatures for a petition supporting the cause to have the Red Sox sign up Schilling for at least another year.
“As Boston Red Sox fans we were thrilled when we heard the news that Curt Schilling has decided to pitch again in 2008,” Kenney said. “However, we are totally disgusted that Red Sox management failed to sign our ace to a one-year contract deal worth the same amount of money he’s making this season.”
The goal of the campaign is to have enough signatures to submit to Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein at the All-Star break. There are also t-shirts for sale supporting the cause.

As a fan of Schilling’s pitching (and owner of a Schill jersey), I’d hardly call myself “disgusted” by the Sox not signing him to an extension. There’s a lot that factors into it. Schilling is getting old and if something starts to go, I’d rather not have another albatross contract limiting the club’s moves in 2008. You also have a number of prospects who are within striking distance of the big league club, both as relievers and starters (namely Cox and Buchholz and a recovering Lester) who could take Schilling’s spot (or, in Cox’s case, move Papelbon back into the rotation) at a fraction of the cost. I’ve always felt a little guilty about having a payroll closer to the Yankees than the Braves. And if there is no good karma to come out of lowering the payroll, perhaps lower operating costs will lower ticket prices at Fenway so poor college kids like me can afford tickets more often than once every five years. HA fat chance.

This reminds me of the silly people in Harvard Sq that had petitions against nuclear weapons when I was at MIT in the late 80s. They were deluded by the theory that if you signed your name “poof” a nuclear weapon would disappear.
It is a nice goal - I would like them to sign Curt too - but a petition? ‘cmon - get a little dose of how the real world works. This is a dumb idea.

wow. That petition is as meaningless as it is ill-conceived.
As everybody knows (including Schilling himself as evidenced on his own blog), Schilling is getting older and has had some injury problems. It is quite possible that he will be far less effective in 2008 than he has been throughout much of his career. I love to watch him pitch and I find his blog incredibly elucidating but it is no way ‘disgusting’ for the Sox to wait and see whether it is appropriate to re-sign him and also how much he ought be paid based on his performance.
From reading his blog, I don’t think Schilling is particularly offended by the front office’s reluctance to re-sign him at such an early date. Neither am I.

Rob, quick question: I know you are aware of how high the Sox are on Luis Exposito. However he is not in camp, not on the rosters they are handing out, and they are being very coy about him. Any way you can dig some info up?

Hey Rob, I have two questions.
First, what do you think the Sox plan is for Devern Hansack? I was in St. Pete today, and he looked damn good against the Rays, and it seems he has had a pretty good spring. I had heard he was a potential closer, but with Paps now in that role, does Hansack still have a spot in the bullpen?
My other question is regarding Alex Ochoa…I think he has a great arm and some speed, and could be great of the bench, but with Hinske and Willy Mo do we really need another backup outfielder?
Thanks Rob, love the blog!
