No blisters for Beckett
Mar 5th, 2007 by Rob Bradford
Josh Beckett just spoke following his 3-inning, 3-hit, 2-strikout performance against the Dodgers. Here are the highlights of his post-performance press conference:
- Feels strong, although there are still things to iron out.
- Feels like at times almost have to hold self back.
- Blisters are still something he is careful with. After doing tests last year it was determined that blisters usually coincided with outbreaks of eczema. To help battle the condition he took supplements of C0Q10. Here is an informative article regarding the supplement.
- Switching leagues last year was no doubt an adjustment, he said, but he felt like he had gone in prepared for it entering last year.
In terms of the daily update regarding the closer’s competition, both Brendan Donnelly and Julian Tavarez are struggling a bit today. Donnelly pitched one, gave up two hits and an earned run. Tavarez surrendered an unearned run while escaping with the bases loaded.
In the B-game, Devern Hansack went two innings, giving up a hit while striking out four.

Anymore information about how Devern Hansack’s Spring camp is going and have there been any significant comments from the coaching staff about his performances? After his performance against the O’s last season and then the ESPN article…Devern is one cat I’m pulling for this Spring. Thanks Rob.

Rob, why isn’t Bryce Cox getting a shot here? I know he is young but he has filthy stuff and IS a closer.

I know it’s early to write him off, but if Piniero’s “arm angle” remains crappy, do the Sox have any options on him? As in, if need be, can the Sox leave him in extended ST or AAA to figure things out? Or is it all or nothing?

Do you know when exactly Beckett started his CoQ10 treatments? As in, were they related at all to his better outings late in the season, or did they give him the ability to throw more curves in side sessions or anything like that?

Eczema, eh? Now that’s really interesting because something like that bears a question: why didn’t the Marlins figure that out years ago? You’d think if one major league baseball team (in this case, the Sox) could find that out, another one could too. Were the Marlins just that braindead, or did they not try hard enough to help their own player get to the root of a frustrating problem? Weird.

I think we probably have the fourth best closer in the AL east. Or atleast we will have the fourth best once we figure out who it is going to be. Mariano Rivera, BJ Ryan and Chris Ray are better then any of our options. I wish we had someone who could step up and compete with them. It is such an important position. I really hope we can get the right person into that position. Well we will see.

Hi Rob - Do you know if there has been any talk about Kyle Snyder as a possible closer? I know he isn’t the prototypical angry-power pitcher that the role demands. But as I recall, most of his starts last year saw him do very well for the first time through the lineup, only to have teams catch up to him in the 4th or 5th inning. Just a thought. I enjoy your work.

Rob - Interesting that you refer to James Loney as an outfielder. He has played 1st base through most of his career (http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/L/James-Loney.shtml). Obviously, Nomar is blocking him at 1st — are the Dodgers planning on giving him more time in the outfield this year?

Josh Beckett should have a better year. He relied on two many fastballs last year and major leaguers just pounded them. I think he is good for at least eighteen wins with an era of about 3.00. Handsack is an intriquing figure who could surprise us all. He has good life on his pitches and could be very valuable to the Bullpen. I expect him to make the major league roster. Donnelly should pitch well enough to be the setup man, and the others will have to fall into place after that. Whatever happen to the interest in Derek Turnbow? He has good stuff and given a chance might be pretty good.
