In between interviews

Wanted to run on over to computer just to let you know I am here. Also, someone mentioned Seth Mnookin’s site, which I forgot to single out. It is top-notch. As someone else said, there are tons and tons of sites. Maybe I’ll pick one per day and give it their due. Some quick sights and sounds before heading back to get the story of the day:- Talked to Wily Mo Pena. He’s … continued »

I had my first round of blog doldrums today for many reasons, which stretched from a bad gas card to trying to explain to my 8-year-old that the Kia Rio that I just picked up isn’t fancy just because it has a lever on the door. That, I explained to him, was a good old fashioned window crank. Talk about a reality check. I swear that Kia only stays in business because of the reliance … continued »

The Ides of Manny

This just in … Brendan Donnelly’s dog, Snapper, ate his wife’s phone. (I can’t help it. In some respects a half German shepherd-half pit bull is just more interesting than most things in Fort Myers.)In other news, Julian Tavarez confirmed that Manny Ramirez told him yesterday that the slugger won’t be reporting until March 1. The mandatory reporting date is February 27. Tavarez, who has known Ramirez since he was 17 years-old, said … continued »

The Green (1 1/2) Miles

And the winner is … Travis Hughes. With a time of 10:09, the 6-foot-5, 28-year-old out-ran the rest of the Red Sox pitchers in the group’s mandatory 1 1/2-mile run. Craig Breslow had the second-best time. It was strongly suggested that all participants finish the jaunt in 12 minutes or under. Let’s just say that unlike Charles Barkley, some of the runners might have actually been beaten by 67-year-old ref Dick Bavetta. In … continued »

His arm didn’t fall off

Just a quick update: Daisuke Matsuzaka threw 40 pitches to Jason Varitek. He started warming up at 10:14 and pitched from 10:17-10:25. Pitching in the same group were the other four starters, Jonathan Papelbon, Josh Beckett, Curt Schilling, and Tim Wakefield, along with Japanese reliever Hideki Okajima, who threw alongside Matsuzaka. The group then went to field hard grounders and line-drives from Terry Francona and Pawtucket manager Ron Johnson. The balls they used were … continued »

Ohayou

Besides the Japanese word that sounds like the Buckeye State and means “Good morning,” I picked up a couple key Japanese phrases thanks to catcher Alberto Castillo (who carried a list of 15 key phrases on a card and has played with pitchers Hideo Nomo, Keiichi Yabu, and Masato Yoshii).”Gambate” - Good morning”Nondai Naiyo” - No problemOf course I learned these about 15 minutes after Daisuke Matsuzaka came through the … continued »
