Give Democrat Niki Tsongas credit for not taking the 5th District race for granted, despite the fact most consider her a heavy favorite in next month’s election to succeed former congressman Marty Meehan.
The Tsongas machine has not let up with the drumbeat of publicity begun many months ago when she first announced her candidacy for the Democratic nomination.
Consider this release sent out Saturday:
Niki Tsongas today called on her Republican opponent Jim Ogonowski to ask the leader of his party in the U.S. House of Representatives, John Boehner, to retract remarks made on CNN from Baghdad on Wednesday where he stated, “we need to continue our effort here because, Wolf, long term, the investment that we’re making today will be a small price if we’re able to stop Al Qaeda here.” Boehner was responding to the following question posed by CNN host Wolf Blitzer, “How much longer will U.S. taxpayers have to shell out $2 billion a week or $3 billion a week as some now are suggesting the cost is going to endure? The loss in blood, the Americans who are killed every month, how much longer do you think this commitment, this military commitment is going to require?”
“House Republican Leader John Boehner’s remarks demonstrate an appalling characterization of the sacrifice being made by thousands of men and women serving our country, as well as the tremendous sacrifices being made by their families. There can be no justification for belittling the price paid by the 3,776 brave Americans who have already given their lives. There is no greater cost to our nation than a life lost fighting on our behalf.
“I call on my Republican opponent Jim Ogonowski to join his fellow Republican Senator John McCain in demanding Republican Leader Boehner retract his remarks and apologize to our courageous men and women in Iraq and their families.”
She’s betting that the public’s disillusionment with the war is a good card to play in her battle against the Republican.
Meanwhile, the candidates have agreed to participate in three debates — Tuesday, Sept. 25, at 7 p.m. on New England Cable News; a League of Women Voters forum scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 27; and an Oct. 9 event sponsored by UMass Lowell and the Lowell Sun.
