State Treasurer Tim Cahill is expected to endorse Niki Tsongas’ candidacy for Congress at a press conference in Lowell today.
Cahill’s nod adds to the air of inevitability the brains behind the Tsongas campaign have sought to give her bid almost since the day she entered the race for Marty Meehan’s seat. And the strategy appears to be working.
What Tsongas lacks in experience and original ideas is more than offset by her famous name — sometimes all you need in Massachusetts — and the fear among Democrats that unless they get on board, they’ll be out in the cold come Sept. 4.
Cahill may be one of those looking towards the future. But he may find the going a bit tough for the time being in his dealings with the Legislature as a result of today’s announcement.
It’s likely Sen. Steve Baddour, D-Methuen, who is backing Lowell’s Eileen Donoghue in the race, won’t soon forget Cahill’s decision to choose sides; nor will the three lawmakers who are running for the post themselves.
