Lawrence police Chief John Romero was at the Eagle-Tribune’s office Tuesday. The chief, a die-hard Yankees fan, couldn’t resist getting in a few digs at me over his team’s surge to within four games of the Red Sox.
However Romero confessed he doesn’t think this year is a repeat of 1978, when the Sox blew a 14-game lead to lose the division race in a one-game playoff with the Yankees.
The Red Sox are not swooning this year. In fact, with their win over Tampa Tuesday night, they matched their best winning percentage of the season — 25 games over .500.
The Yankees have closed the gap by playing an incredible stretch of .750 baseball — winning three out of every four games they play. Romero said he doesn’t think his team can continue to play at this pace. Meanwhile, the Red Sox simply have to play as they have all season.
That’s hope enough for me.
