You might be surprised at what’s uppermost on North Shore teenagers’ minds when they get to interrogate their local congressman.
According to John Tierney, D-Salem, it’s not the presidential election or even the war in Iraq. It’s the genocide taking place in the Darfur region of the Sudan.
I’ve seen a couple of lawn signs calling attention to the problem along the suburban back roads between the North Beverly and North Andover offices of Eagle-Tribune Publishing. But apparently the situation is getting a lot of attention at local high schools.
In an interview Monday morning at his district office in downtown Peabody, Tierney said he favors putting continued pressure on the Sudanese government to end the killing.
Tierney would like to see the Chinese government, which has considerable investments in the country, as well as U.S. companies with investments there, get more involved. In order to encourage the latter, he’s backing legislation that would excuse corporations from any tax liability they might incur as a result of any divestment decisions.
