With the passage of yesterday’s deadline to file nomination papers, there is only one Carlos Matos running for City Council in Lawrence.
Carlos R. Matos, the political newcomer, withdrew from the race for an at-large seat on the council.
Carlos D. Matos, the former city councilor and 2005 mayoral candidate, remains in the race.
Carlos D. says Carlos R. was running at the behest of state Rep. William Lantigua in an effort to confuse voters and hurt his candidacy. Carlos R. and Lantigua say that’s not true. Carlos R. says he withdrew to avoid confusing voters.
I like to see new faces enter the political fray. Call me cynical, but I got suspicious when that new face just happened to have the same name as another candidate.
