Clay Buchholz, who is dealing with a mild right hamstring strain, felt fine while throwing from 120 feet today and is expected to throw a bullpen session Tuesday, although he would like to do it earlier, according to Boston.com.
Left-handed starter Felix Doubront, who has weakness is in his throwing shoulder, is expected to throw a bullpen Wednesday while reliever Craig Breslow, who also is dealing shoulder weakness, threw from 75 feet today, Boston.com reported.
Of these three, the only real concern probably should be Doubront because he has dealt with injury issues throughout his young career and three more innings last year (161.0) than he had ever thrown before in one season.
The most inning Doubront ever threw in one season before last year was 129.1. And that’s since signing with the Red Sox organization as an amateur free agent in 2005.
Some felt he should have been shut down in September because he was fatigued. I felt the opposite. At the time, I felt if they shut him down early, he was just going to face the same problem late in 2013. Soon or later you have to stop babying certain pitchers and build up their arm strength for a full season.
