~ New Red Sox closer Joel Hanrahan said his wife’s family is from Brockton and Avon. They now live in Virginia. His wife has attended a couple of games at Fenway, but this was the first time Hanrahan himself ever stepped foot in the ballpark.
“She”s been to one of the Red Sox/Yankees games here before and she said it’s awesome,” Hanrahan said. “The environment of a baseball game is completely different than any other place that she’s been. That will be a fun experience.”
~ With Fenway crossed off his list, the only three parks Hanrahan has never been to: Angel Stadium of Anaheim, Target Field in Minnesota and U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago.
~ Hanrahan said he will stick with Slipknot or Stone Sour for his entrance song. Hanrahan was born in Des Moines, Iowa, where both Slipknot and Stone Sour were formed.
“So I like to throw some Iowa roots out ther whenever I can,” he said.
The past two years, Hanrahan has gone with Slipknot song “Before I Forget.”
~ Hanrahan will wear No. 52.
~ After his tour of Fenway Park, Hanrahan called it “amazing.”
“A lot bigger than I thought it was,” he said. “Obviously, a ton of history here. Got to go up on the top of the Monster and see what it’s like from that angle. My wife is going to be begging me to sit out there one day. Looked great.
“It’s a lot nicer than I thought it was going to be,” Hanrahan added.
~ Hanrahan has worked out the past two offseasons at the same training facility in Dallas as Red Sox third baseman Will Middlebrooks.
~ Hanrahan played with Dustin Pedroia in the 2009 World Baseball Classic but the closer does not plan to play this year.
“I got the chance to experience that in ’09 and I’m expecting my first child — my wife and I — in March so we’re going to take the WBC off,” he said. ”And I knew, first spring training with the Red Sox, I really kind of want to get to know everybody and kind of get to know the coaches and let them get to know me as well.”
~ Hanrahan said he is laidback and always had a good relationship with the media. He said he used to give some of the reporters in Pittsburgh a hard time for some of their attire.
