Max Scherzer went 16-7 with a 3.74 ERA in 32 starts this year. He led the AL in strikeouts per nine innings pitched (11.1).

I pointed out yesterday that he posted a 1-3 record with a horrific 7.77 ERA in five starts in April and a 8-5 record with a 4.72 ERA in 17 first-half starts.

But he was dominant in the second half with an 8-2 record and 2.69 ERA. He posted a 4-0 record and 2.25 ERA in five August starts, then a 2-1 record and 1.91 ERA in six starts in September/October.

Click here for an interesting article on Scherzer and how his vast improvement during the year could have had to do with being motivated by his brother Alex’s unexpected death in June.
