Albert Pujols’ 10-year, $254 million deal with the Angels is the second largest contract ever given to an MLB player behind the 10-year, $275 million deal the Yankees gave Alex Rodriguez in December 2007. Prince Fielder’s nine-year, $214 million deal with the Tigers this offseason is the fourth largest.

Of the top 10 largest contracts in MLB history, nine of them have been given out by AL teams.

“I do think the economics are in favor of the AL,” one National League GM commented to The Eagle-Tribune recently.

“The Pujols and Fielder signings demonstrate that. The Mets, Dodgers and Cubs should be premier franchises that spend a lot of money. There is a chance that all three might not crack .500 in 2012.”
