The Red Sox have hired Gary Hughes to assist their major league scouting staff.

Hughes scouted New England Patriots QB Tom Brady as a baseball player in high school and told the Montreal Expos that they should draft him.

“(Tom was) a definite prospect,” Hughes was quoted as saying in Matt Doeden’s “Tom Brady: Unlikely Champion.” “(He was) a big catcher, and sometimes you shy away from big catchers, but he was projected as a power hitter with a very good arm who handled pitchers well.”

Brady was drafted by the Montreal Expos in the 18th round of the 1995 MLB June Amateur Draft but did not sign with them.
