Red Sox right-handed pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka today threw his first bullpen session since undergoing Tommy John surgery last June, according to Kyodo News.
Matsuzaka threw 21 pitches, including 10 with the catcher squatting behind the plate, during a workout off the mound in Fort Myers.
“Today is like a warm up,” Matsuzaka told Kyodo News. “I think I’ll throw harder next week.”
Matsuzaka is expected to throw long toss Wednesday and another bullpen Friday, the article stated.
The Japanese pitcher went 3-3 with a 5.30 ERA in eight games, including seven starts last season before having surgery.
He is 49-30 with a 4.25 ERA in 106 career games, including 105 starts.
