Red Sox right-handed pitching prospect Stolmy Pimentel should be on your radar because he is a talented 20 year old.

The 6-foot-3, 186-pound Dominican Republic native was signed by the Red Sox in July 2006 at just 16 years old.

He pitched at Single-A Salem this past season, posting a 9-11 record with a 4.06 earned run average and a team-high 102 strikeouts in 26 starts, 128 2/3 innings. He also pitched in the 2010 All-Star Futures Game in Anaheim on July 11.

“Maybe you don’t have the background on this kid from where he was but you can just see the size and strength right now — that’s grown a ton over the last few years,”  Boston’s Director of Player Development Mike Hazen said. “Developmentally, he’s done really well. He went to Salem as a 20 year old, as a starting pitcher. Went through that league (Carolina League) the entire season very consistent. I know the numbers necessarily aren’t eye-popping as of yet. But if you know that league at all, playing eight teams, with eight teams, you play the same seven teams over, over and over again. And that can be a challenge for a young kid when they know what he has, and they know how to attack him. We felt like, start to finish last year, we were really impressed with the way that he handled himself.”

ESPN’s Keith Law just ranked Pimentel as the sixth best prospect in the Red Sox organization.

He ranks as Boston’s No. 6 overall prospect and fourth best pitching prospect by Baseball America, which ranked his changeup the best among Red Sox farmhands, according to the Red Sox.

In four seasons in the minors, he has gone 27-21 with a 3.64 ERA and 326 strikeouts in 77 games, 73 starts and 371 1/3 innings pitched.
