New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson called for the resignation of Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf today, and said he will deliver a major policy address about the war on global terror tomorrow.
His announcement came hours after the assassination of Benazir Bhutto. Bhutto was the Pakistan People’s Party leader and former prime minister. She was killed as she left a political appearance in Pakistan early this morning.
Richardson’s speech tomorrow morning will be given from Iowa, and he will address how the world should deal with Pakistan in the wake of Bhutto’s death.
Excerpts of Richardson’s speech were released earlier today.
He will say the world needs to focus on human rights, instead of politics as usual.
“American support for Musharraf is yet another example of how the Bush administration has lost the world’s backing for our actions,” his speech reads. “Not a penny more in aid will be provided to Pakistan to fight terrorism until Musharraf leaves office.”

The candidates were quick to issue statements or make comments at campaign events yesterday following the assassination of former Pakistani prime minister Benazir Bhutto.
The Associated Press reported that the Pakistani opposition leader’s death has pushed terrorism to the forefront in many voters’ minds, which could help candidates like Rudy Giuliani and Hillary Clinton who are seen as strong on national security.
Clinton, Giuliani, John McCain, Barack Obama, Bill Richardson, Mike Huckabee and Mitt Romney all made comments or issued press releases today responding to Bhutto’s assassination.
Do you think Bhutto’s death will have an impact on the 2008 presidential race here in the U.S.?

College Democrats of New Hampshire have spoken, and while they can’t agree on everything, they’ve agreed that Sen. Hillary Clinton is not the best choice for president.
Six members of the group’s executive board announced their endorsements for the Jan. 8 primary over the weekend.
Two were for Sen. Barack Obama, two were for Gov. Bill Richardson, and one was for former Sen. John Edwards.
One board member remains undecided, but the group made one thing clear | no one thought Clinton was the best choice for president.
The students represent schools from all over New Hampshire, including Dartmouth College and the University of New Hampshire.
Mike Heslin, the group’s president, who attends Dartmouth, chose to support Obama, but said it was a tough decision because there is a “tremendous” field of candidates for the Democrats to choose from.

“For the same reason I launched this campaign, I must now end it.”
Republican Tom Tancredo officially announced the end to his presidential bid earlier this afternoon. On his campaign Web site, Tancredo posted a letter to his supporters, along with a video detailing the reason why he made the decision to end his candidacy.
Tancredo’s campaign was centered around illegal immigration, often taking more radical views on the state of our borders, approving controversially graphic ads pointing out the potential dangers of immigration.
“While several of the candidates appear to be committed to our cause, there are others whose records of being public servants have been abysmal on this issue,” he said in the video. “They have been on the other side of the battle, encouraging and inviting illegal immigrants to come to this country with their policies and pronouncements. I fear that remaining in this race, when I know I can’t win, could contribute to the nomination of one of those pro-amnesty, open border candidates. We have done too much and gone too far, and the stakes are way too high for me to allow that to happen.”
Tancredo said his candidacy helped make tremendous headway in the fight against illegal immigration in America, and that despite the conclusion to his bid for the White House, he will remain to be at the forefront of fixing America’s borders.
“We both know that this fight and this war are not yet won,” he said. “You can count on me to stand with you as we seek to preserve this great nation, its culture, and the promise it holds for all those who respect and abide by the laws of our land. Thank you for the honor and trust you have placed in me, and all you have done to advance our crusade. May each of you have a blessed and Merry Christmas.”
Tancredo was dead last in the Republican polls, with only 1 percent of the vote nationally.
Update: Tancredo has announced that he will endorse Mitt Romney as the candidate best suited to continue the fight against illegal immigration.

Michelle Cunha of Hill, N.H. works for New Hampshire Peace Action, and she landed in the spotlight Monday when she was asked to leave Mitt Romney’s campaign event at Insight Technologies in Londonderry.
Cunha said she has been making the rounds of both Democratic and Republican contenders’ campaign stops, handing out a list of questions for people to ask of the presidential candidates.
She finished passing out the leaflets on Monday and was sitting down to hear Romney, who had not yet arrived, when a man and a woman asked who she was with, why she was passing out the fliers and who invited her to the event.
Cunha said part of the conversation went like this: “We support this candidate, which is why we invited him. These don’t support him.” Then the two asked her to leave, and she did.
It was ironic, she said, because she originally went to Insight’s other Londonderry location by mistake, and employees there were not only helpful but gave her a map to help her find the right address. She was never told that she needed an invitation to get in, she said.
Insight Technologies did not immediately return questions seeking comment. The employee who collected the leaflets did not want to be interviewed. She referred questions to the company’s human resources office.
Romney ended up answering the questions Cunha had handed out after Herbert Hoffman of Maine asked him how he felt about the peace activist being tossed from the event. Hoffman showed Romney the leaflet and asked if the questions were toxic to him.
“There is nothing toxic to me,” he said. “I was on ‘Meet the Press’ yesterday.”
The questions on Cunha’s leaflets asked candidates who support ending the Iraq War if they would have the troops out by the end of 2009. For candidates who want to keep the troops there, the question is how they propose paying for a long-term military presence.
