New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson called for the resignation of Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf today, and said he will deliver a major policy address about the war on global terror tomorrow.
His announcement came hours after the assassination of Benazir Bhutto. Bhutto was the Pakistan People’s Party leader and former prime minister. She was killed as she left a political appearance in Pakistan early this morning.
Richardson’s speech tomorrow morning will be given from Iowa, and he will address how the world should deal with Pakistan in the wake of Bhutto’s death.
Excerpts of Richardson’s speech were released earlier today.
He will say the world needs to focus on human rights, instead of politics as usual.
“American support for Musharraf is yet another example of how the Bush administration has lost the world’s backing for our actions,” his speech reads. “Not a penny more in aid will be provided to Pakistan to fight terrorism until Musharraf leaves office.”
