“For the same reason I launched this campaign, I must now end it.”
Republican Tom Tancredo officially announced the end to his presidential bid earlier this afternoon. On his campaign Web site, Tancredo posted a letter to his supporters, along with a video detailing the reason why he made the decision to end his candidacy.
Tancredo’s campaign was centered around illegal immigration, often taking more radical views on the state of our borders, approving controversially graphic ads pointing out the potential dangers of immigration.
“While several of the candidates appear to be committed to our cause, there are others whose records of being public servants have been abysmal on this issue,” he said in the video. “They have been on the other side of the battle, encouraging and inviting illegal immigrants to come to this country with their policies and pronouncements. I fear that remaining in this race, when I know I can’t win, could contribute to the nomination of one of those pro-amnesty, open border candidates. We have done too much and gone too far, and the stakes are way too high for me to allow that to happen.”
Tancredo said his candidacy helped make tremendous headway in the fight against illegal immigration in America, and that despite the conclusion to his bid for the White House, he will remain to be at the forefront of fixing America’s borders.
“We both know that this fight and this war are not yet won,” he said. “You can count on me to stand with you as we seek to preserve this great nation, its culture, and the promise it holds for all those who respect and abide by the laws of our land. Thank you for the honor and trust you have placed in me, and all you have done to advance our crusade. May each of you have a blessed and Merry Christmas.”
Tancredo was dead last in the Republican polls, with only 1 percent of the vote nationally.
Update: Tancredo has announced that he will endorse Mitt Romney as the candidate best suited to continue the fight against illegal immigration.
