A retired Red Sox player is backing presidential candidate Bill Richardson.
Luis Tiant, a right-handed pitcher for the Sox in the ’70s known as “El Tiante”, will back the presidential hopeful at Manchester’s latest “Mi Familia Con Richardson” event.
In a statement released by his campaign staff, Tiant said he supports Richardson because he could deliver in the clutch.
Richardson chimed back, saying the two men have a lot in common.
“Luis and I share an affinity for Red Sox baseball and maybe the occasional cigar,” he said.
Tiant, a native of Cuba, opened the World Series for the Sox against the Cincinnati Reds in 1975. He pitched for 19 seasons, and had a career ERA of 3.30.
Tiant will appear at the Alpine Club in Manchester for the celebration on Sunday, Dec. 16, at 6 p.m.
