Sen. Hillary Clinton revealed to voters in Iowa today her new plan to make imports safer | something that’s sure to resound with some voters who are nervous about buying toys for children this holiday season. She said it is “simply unacceptable” to have this problem in this country in the year 2007.
”Parents shouldn’t have to worry about the safety of the food they serve for Thanksgiving or the toys they buy their children for Christmas,” Clinton said. “Protecting the public is one of the most basic jobs of our government, but the Bush administration’s response to the rash of toy recalls and contaminated food scares has been slow and inadequate.”
If elected, Clinton would hold foreign producers to American safety standards, expand the number of inspectors and stiffen penalties for violators.
Outline of Clinton’s import safety plan:Creating a single food safety agency.
Banning lead in children’s products.
Requiring independent third-party testing for imported toys.
Holding importers liable for the products they bring in.
Imposing stiffer civil penalties and pursuing criminal prosecutions against companies that put children and citizens at risk.
Mandating and fully funding Country of Origin Labeling.
Do you think that releasing this plan at the start of the shopping season will make people think of Clinton while they are in the toy aisle and increase her support?
