The state Attorney General’s office has launched a proble into “push polls,” after somebody used the telephone to take a swipe at Mitt Romney’s religion and military service. Deputy Attorney Bud Fitch is asking any New Hampshire residents who received the telephone calls to call him at 271-3658.
Push polls, which ask voters questions but sometimes also use the opportunity to go negative on a candidate, are not necessarily illegal in New Hampshire, Fitch said. But the callers must name the candidate(s) they’re working for, supporting or opposing, and provide the telephone number of the push poll. If they don’t, criminal penalties or fines could be imposed.
Fitch was asked to launch the probe by former New Hampshire Congressman Chuck Douglas, who is the McCain campaign’s state vice chairman.
Romney’s campaign said the calls were made in New Hampshire and in Iowa.
