Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul set a new record when his campaign raised more than $2.7 million in online contributions in 16 hours. It is the largest single-day online primary fundraising effort in election history, according to his campaign.
Overall, the campaign raised $4.3 million in a 24-hour period, and thought that was also a record. But further research showed that the online fundraiser set the record at 4 p.m. on Monday. The previous record was held by John Kerry, who raised $2.7 million online in two days after the 2004 Super Tuesday primaries. Republican John McCain raised $1 million online after the New Hampshire primary in 2000.
Approximately 21,000 Americans have made online donations thus far.
